The SOUL BOWL is one of Broward’s time honored traditions.  The game is traditionally held on a Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium.  The game is a celebration… celebration of communities, a celebration of history, a celebration of music and a celebration of life.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Wilma put a severe dent in the celebration plans.  First, the winds of Wilma toppled the lighting structures at Lockhart Stadium, rendering Lockhart unsafe for play.  Second, due to hurricane debris, downed traffic lights and transportation issues the game was conducted on a Tuesday afternoon rather than Saturday night.  Third, the game was played at McArthur High Stadium, one of the few stadiums deemed structurally sound to hold the game.  The evening excitement was turned into a lazy afternoon game.  Oh!  What a SOUL BOWL to remember.

Blanche Ely continued their domination of Dillard winning their fifth straight SOUL BOWL.  The all time SOUL BOWL series is tied 17-17-2.  Blanche Ely scored on two of its first three possessions to take a 14-0 lead after Avery Holley caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Travis Standley.  Running back Devan Jones extended the lead on a 10-yard run.  At the end of the first half Blanche Ely held a commanding 34-0 lead.

In the second half Dillard picked off a pass and subsequently scored.  On a strange play, Panther defensive back Chaz West picked off a pass, fumbled the ball and Dillard’s Kendrick Johnson collected the loose ball and gained 20 yards.  Wayne Baynard later scored on a 9 yard run.

Dillard’s special teams scored a touchdown on a 61 yard run off a blocked field goal by Jahmal Blanchard.  The win clinched Blanche Ely a district championship and state playoff berth.  Even in a losing cause, the Panthers advanced into the playoffs as a district runner-up.
