Last year Western High Principal was faced with the disgusting task of kissing the pig after a loss to the Cooper City Cowboys in the annual HOG Bowl. Only in Broward County! There was a time when Cooper City and Western High were deemed to be located in Naples, Florida. The HOG Bowl symbolized the wild west in Broward County. Although times and demographics have changed, the HOG Bowl is still one of the BCAA’s time honored traditions. The losing school principal is required to kiss the pig at the conclusion of the game.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first as special teams player Will Griffin blocked a Cooper City punt with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Western running back Jarred Allen (#6) scored on the next play from five yards out. The extra point failed and the Wildcat’s led 6-0.
On their next possession, Cooper City running back Ricky Neaves (#34) moved the ball twenty-eight yards on a run. The run set up a 33-yard field goal by Justin English, the first quarter ended with the Wildcats up 6-3.
The Wildcats special teams struck again in the second quarter as senior Daniel Alosu blocked a Cooper City punt. Allan scored on a six yard run three plays later. Allen scored on a six yard run three plays later. The Wildcats attempted and connected a two-point conversion and led 14-3 at half time.
Western rolled in the second half behind a punishing running game. Junior, Allen rushed for 126 yards and 18 carries and scored a season high three touchdowns. The Western running game amassed over 288 yards.
At half time the newly renovated Gill field was re-dedicated.
Billy R. Gill and Don Linton, former principal of Cooper City High School, were both members of the Rotary Club. They also had business dealings together. Mr. Gill had a farm that Mr. Linton visited often. Mr. Gill was the first Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of Davie. He was in the Exchange and Youth Program and was a friend to children everywhere. Mr. Gill bought clothes and shoes and financially provided for any child in need for our community never wanting to be in the limelight. There are still scholarships provided yearly by the Gill family. The Billy R. Gill Stadium was Mr. Linton’s way of paying back to a very kind and generous man and friend. The Gill family still owns and operates Gill Realty in Davie on Davie Road.
