It was raining in the SWAMP during the first half…GATORS love fresh water.  The GATOR defense was playing their familiar style of bend but don’t break.  At half time the score was 0-0.

In the first half, the Bucks found it very difficult to run on the Gator defense.  In the second half, the Bucks began getting the ball to their playmaker Brandon Bell (#1).  QB Brad McClellan hit Bell on two back-to-back pass plays for 22 yards.  The Bucks marched 60 yards on 11 plays mixing up the pass with the run.  With 2:33 left in the third quarter, Rodney Harrell (#25) scored on a one yard run.

The Gators down 7-0 came out in the shotgun on the next series.  Everglades QB Solomon Smith hit tight end Jeff Wilson (#84) on two consecutive pass plays of 27 yards.  An intentional grounding penalty ended the Gator drive and the Gators were forced to punt.

The Bucks took over but were forced backward thanks to a holding call.  The Gator defense then answered.  Facing second and 22 on their 17, the Bucks opted for a screen pass.  Linebacker Bobby Seay stripped the ball and Conroy Black (#21) scooped up the loose ball and ran into the end zone.  The Gator defense rose to the occasion tying the score at 7-7.

The fourth quarter was a chess game…each coach utilized field position strategies.  The Bucks had a golden opportunity to take the lead as McClellan hit #8 Steve Tyreene on a forty yard bomb.  However, the play was nullified by a penalty, ineligible man down field.  On third and 18, McClellan was sacked ending the Bucks only threat in the fourth quarter.

The Gators received the ensuing punt at the Deerfield forty-yard line.  The Gators attempted to ride the back of Dwann Ivey to get in field goal range.  But the Buck defense held Ivey to 3 yards on first down, one yard on second down and an incomplete pass on third down.  The fourth quarter ended 7-7 and the teams headed into overtime.

Deerfield Beach senior kicker Norvin Ruiz was confident as he knocked the winning extra point in overtime leading the Bucks to a 14-13 win at Everglades in a Class 6A regional semifinal.  Although both teams scored on the ground in overtime, the Gator kicker pushed the extra point wide left leaving the Bucks with the opportunity to win the game.
