If only a high school game was two quarters instead of four. At half time the Deerfield Beach Bucks led 8-7. Buck quarterback Brad McClellan (#6) rolling to his right hit Steve Tirogene on a 45-yard pass to put the Bucks up 6-0 with 3:53 left in the first quarter. The Bucks were successful on the two-point conversion and led 8-0.
The St. Thomas Raiders answered back on the next series. Led by running back Bobby Crawford (#5), the Raiders scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter to close the gap to 8-7. Bobby Crawford had an excellent game running for 152 yards on 20 carries. The Raider running back scored three touchdowns on runs of 5, 6 and 30 yards.
The Buck game plan was to go on top and go long. On the Bucks second possession McClellan put the ball right in the hands of wide receive Brandon Bell (#1) for a possible touchdown. The ball slipped through the hands of Bell. McClellan finished the evening 10-27-1, with two touchdown passes.
The Buck defense forced the Raiders into two first half turnovers. The Bucks exited the field at half time with a jubilant air of confidence. This was the first time this season the Raiders found themselves behind at half time.
In the second half the Raiders put the ball in the hands of Crawford, running behind the all-American line of Wenger, Young and Gilbert. However, the play that broke the back of Deerfield Beach was a special teams gaffe. Defensive end Vinny Zann (#54) blocked a Deerfield Beach punt with 9:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. St. Thomas defensive back Chris Reed fell on the ball in the end zone giving the Raiders a commanding 21-8 lead.
The Deerfield Beach Bucks with 5:49 left in the game tried a fake punt from their own 20. The fake failed and St. Thomas scored again. What was a close evenly matched game in the first half was turning into a route by the Raiders. The game featured a celebration at half time as Miami Dolphin Stockar McDougle had his #77 Buck jersey retired from play. Stockar, a former Buck was an all-American at Oklahoma University and number one draft choice of the Detroit Lions.
