The stage is set…October 14, 2005, the game of the year, Hollywood Hills (6-0) ranked #3 in the state vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (6-0) ranked #2 in the state. The game will also determine first place in district 16-5A.
The Hollywood Hills High Spartans have been the surprise of the year. Head Coach Al Lang always puts a winning team on the field. However, no one predicted that the Spartans would be undefeated at the season mid-point, and ranked #3 in the state.
There are many reasons for the Spartan success. At the top of the list is super sophomore running back Chris Anderson. Anderson (#2) finished with 18 carries for 148 yards and touchdown runs of 6, 35 and 21 yards. The Hollywood Hills Spartans exploded for 24 unanswered second quarter points as they cruised to a 38-13 victory. The Spartans led 38-0 until the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The Spartan defense also got into the scoring action. Defensive Back Akevis Anderson picked off Western’s QB Mark Slorp’s screen pass and returned it 35 yards for a score, giving Hollywood Hills a 21-0 lead.
Spartan running back Mike Burns (#28) also contributed 65 yards on seven carries. The Spartans gained over 220 yards on the ground. Hills QB Travis Parrish was efficient passing, completing 7 of 10 for 132 yards.
The Spartan defense forced QB Slorp to throw two interceptions. Slorp was only able to complete 4 of 17 passes.
The stage is set for next week.
