The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders feature the most imposing offensive line in the BCAA and the state of Florida. Three of the offensive linemen are listed as first time all-state players, Sam Young, 6-7, 280, Marcus Gilbert, 6-6, 280 and Daniel Wenger, 6-4, 285. The Stoneman Douglas Eagles caught a break; Daniel Wenger sat out the game due to an injury. Unfortunately, that break did not stop the BCAA’s leading offensive team from amassing 170 yards on the ground and 120 through the air.
The Raiders scored first as Marcel Archer (#3) ran seven yards for the touchdown at the 4:09 mark in the first quarter. The Raiders methodically marched down the field keeping the ball on the ground. The extra point was good and the Raiders led 7-0.
The Raiders struggled in the early going with turnovers. Due to Hurricane Rita, both teams lost extensive practice time during the week. The Eagles recovered a muff of a punt on the Raiders forty-four yard line. However, the Eagles could not capitalize and were forced to punt. The Eagles attempted a fake on fourth down that resulted in a fumble and the Raider ball on the Douglas thirty-five yard line. However, Eagle defensive back Jackie Caryln (#4) intercepted Wesley Carroll’s pass in the end zone. At the end of the first quarter, the Raiders led 7-0.
The Raiders increased their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter as QB Wesley Carroll connected on a three yard pass with wide receiver Leonard Hankerson (#1). Early in the second quarter, Marcel Archer scampered for forty-four yards to increase the Raider lead to 21-0. Archer carried the ball only eight times but he finished with 130 yards and two touchdowns. At halftime the Raiders were in control 21-0.
In the second half, the Raiders demonstrated why they are ranked No. 2 in the state Class 5A poll and No. 13 in the USA Today poll. Brent Swenson, the Raiders field goal kicker, connected from 39 yards out to increase the margin to 24-0. Hankerson caught his second touchdown pass from Carroll, a twenty-two yard pass with 3:08 left in the third. The Raiders finished the scoring with 1:00 left in the third quarter on a thirty-seven yard punt return by Philip Garner (#4).
The Raiders are a complete team, strong running attack, excellent special teams and efficient passing attack. Raider QB Wesley Carroll kept the Douglas defense off balance finishing with 11-18-1 for 120 yards.
