With 5:36 left in the fourth quarter, Cypress Bay safety Brently Harstad (#29) recovered a fumble on the Colonel fifteen-yard line. The fumble recovery led to a two-yard touchdown run by Bay running back Tyrone Lowe-Chin (#6). The touchdown proved to be the winning score in the Bay’s 13-7 win over the Colonels. The senior running back had 30 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cypress Bay strategy was simple…control the ball on the ground and keep the BCAA’s number two-ranked offense off the field. The Bay held the ball for the first seven minutes of the first period. A fumble by Tyrone Lowe-Chin on the Colonel fifteen ended the drive. The first quarter ended 0-0.
The Colonels scored first at the 3:59 mark in the second quarter. QB Simeon Dunston hit Kenson Louis (#7) for a 16-yard touchdown. The touchdown was set up by two excellent runs by Zack Walker (#3) one for 30 yards and the second for 15 yards. Before leaving with an injury in the third quarter, Walker rushed for 81 yards on 14 carries. The extra point was good and the Colonels led 7-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Keon Strachan (#3) ran the kickoff back fifty-six yards to the Colonel 35 yard line. With 1:50 left in the second quarter, Lowe-Chin punched it in for the Bay. The extra point was good and the first half ended all tied up at 7-7.
The Cypress Bay defense held the No. 2 BCAA offense to seven points. Much credit must be extended to Frank Hepler, defensive coordinator for the Lightning. Frank Hepler spent most of his coaching career walking the sidelines as the Colonels head coach. It was an emotional game for Frank, who was now charged with shutting down the Colonel attack.
The Colonels had an opportunity to tie the game with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter. The Colonels blocked a Lightning punt and took over on the Lightning 45 yard line. The Colonels were able to get the ball to the Lightning 35. However, the Lightning defense held, securing the win, 13-7.
