The Hollywood Hills Spartans are no longer Broward’s best-kept secret. The Spartans (3-0) proved that their state ranking is no fluke. The Spartans wore down the Lightning in the fourth quarter in a 20-10 victory.
Both teams came into the game off impressive victories the previous week. The Spartans beat a talented Blanche Ely team 24-22. The Lightning (1-1) beat a strong and aggressive Boyd Anderson team. The question coming into this game was who would control the line of scrimmage and the running game?
The Spartans scored first at the 5:57 mark in the second quarter. QB Travis Parrish running to his right threw back across his body to a wide-open Amos Wood (#5) for a six yard score. The extra point was good and the Spartans were off to a 7-0 lead.
The Lightning scored their only touchdown of the game in the third quarter. With 8:07 on the clock, QB T.J. Pacchiola connected with Keon Strachen (#3) on a quick slant. Strachen ran untouched for 63 yards and a Lightning score. The extra point was converted, tying the game at 7-7.
The most critical play of the game for the Lightning was not a score, fumble recovery or interception. It was the loss of star running back Kenny Mantuo. Kenny Mantuo is the heart and soul of the Lightning offense. The running back carried the ball 30 times against Boyd Anderson for 129 yards. At the 5:57 mark in the third quarter, Mantuo was tackled and left the game with a fractured ankle. Up to this point in the game, Mantuo had carried the ball 15 times for 67 yards.
However, even with Mantuo on the sidelines, the Lightning were able to get the ball down to the Hills nine yard line with 3:00 to go in the third quarter. On third and goal QB T.J. Pacchiola was tackled by Spartans defensive end James Wilson (#1) for a nine yard loss. Lightning field goal kicker Corey Brown (#39) connected on a 39-yard field goal. The Lightning were up 10-7.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Spartans. The fourth quarter featured Spartans sophomore running back Chris Anderson (#2). Anderson scampered 30 yards for a Hills touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The conversion was good and the Spartans led 14-10. The Hills defense held the Lightning at bay. The Bay went four and out on their next three possessions.
With 2:16 left in the game, Spartan full back Mike Burns (#28) sealed the victory with a brusing 10 yard run. The extra point was missed and the Spartans led 20-10.
The Spartans demonstrated strength running the ball and stopping the run. Sophomore Chris Anderson finished with 109 yards on 18 carries. Complimenting Chris Anderson was the tough running of Mike Burns, 58 yards on 10 carries. The Hills defense shut down the Bay running and passing game in the fourth quarter. The Hills defense was led by their two bookends Jabaal Sheard and James Wilson.
For the Lightning, Brian Griffith had six tackles including two for losses. The Lightning will have to bounce back without their star running back Kenny Mantuo. The Bay had numerous chances to score points. In the first quarter the Lightning drove the ball to the Spartan six-yard line only to miss a first down by inches on a fourth and four run by Mantuo.
