The Deerfield Beach Bucks held off the Coconut Creek Cougars to win their first game of the year. The Bucks took a quick 12-0 lead at halftime. A fifty-minute lightning storm delayed the restart of the game for the third quarter. When play resumed, the Cougar running game got rolling. The Cougars scored the next two touchdowns and led 14-12 with 7:24 left in the game. The Bucks came back to win the game on a eighteen yard pass from quarterback Brad McClellan (#6) to wide receiver Steve Tirogene (#8).
The Cougars had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard early in the first quarter. Shawn Williams (#9) took the opening kickoff 80 yards to the Buck’s six-yard line. The Cougars failed on three running plays to get the ball in the end zone. The Cougars attempted a field goal on fourth down. Kicker Raul Renta (#40) pulled the kick wide right. The Cougars were unable to capitalize on Williams kickoff return.
At the 6:52 mark in the first quarter, Buck QB McClellan (#6) hit a streaking Brandon Bell (#1) on a 60 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good and the Bucks led 6-0.
The Cougar offense could not sustain any drives in the second quarter. McClellan, who finished the game 8-14-158 yards, connected with Bell along the sidelines for a 25-yard gain. McClellan then hit Tremain Spencer (#26) 10-yard TD pass. The Bucks extra point attempt failed and Deerfield went into the locker room leading 12-0.
The Cougars came out fired up in the second half and dictated the flow of the game with a strong running attack. Running Back Gary Innocent (#32) scored twice in the second half on runs of one and four yards. The leading ball carrier for the Cougars was Fernandez Jacques (#3), who carried the ball nine times for sixty-five yards.
