The Boyd Anderson Cobras scored twenty-two unanswered points in the fourth quarter to trip up the Blanche Ely Tigers 22-19.  Trailing 19-12 with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter 5’7”, 135 pound Cobra Joey Lee blocked a Blanche Ely punt, picked the ball up and ran for the game winning touchdown.  Running back Jamar Dukes (#5) scored the extra point from two yards out giving the Tigers a 20-19 advantage.  The Tigers twice mishandled the snap on their final drive resulting in a safety and a final score of 22-19.

Once again the opening season of BCAA football was postponed due to Hurricane weather.  The season opening game for the two teams was moved from Friday to Monday night.  Prior to Monday night’s game the skies opened up with a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning.  Field conditions in the first half resulted in numerous fumbles by both teams.  However, at half time the Tigers had a commanding 12-0 lead.

The Tigers were led by QB Travis Standley who made the most of his four completions by throwing three touchdowns.  Standley, making his Tiger debut threw touchdown passes of 52 yards, 3 yards and 17 yards.  Standley’s final touchdown pass late in the third quarter to wide receiver Holley (#14) gave the Tigers a commanding 19-0 lead.  Holley caught two touchdown passes for the Tigers including a 52-yard bomb along the sidelines in the second quarter.

At the conclusion of the third quarter the game seemed out of reach for the Cobras.  Trailing 19-0 at the start of the fourth quarter the Cobras made one last drive to get back into the game. Cobra QB Herb Bynes (#12) got hot hitting running back Wright (#26) on a flair pass for 20 yards, and two pass completions to Thompson (#1) for fifteen, and then ten yards.   Finally Jamar Dukes (#5) rambled up the middle for 25 yards and the Cobras were on the board 19-6.

The Tigers fumbled on the next series, and the momentum quickly swung to the Cobra side.  The Cobra’s moved the ball down the field, Herb Bynes connected on a 10 yard pass to (#81) Henry Reed on fourth down to keep the Cobra drive alive.  Bynes then connected with wide receiver Travis Thompson (#1) who made a one handed circus catch at the Tiger one yard line.  The Cobras scored on the ensuing play and with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter trailed 19-12.

The Tiger offense continued to go backwards. Joey Lee blocked the punt on the next series and scored giving the Cobras a 20-19 lead.  The Ely offense worn out and stunned continued to shoot themselves in the foot.  On their final possession the Tiger center hiked the ball twice over QB Standley’s head, resulting in a safety and a 22-19 Cobra lead.

The Cobra defense deserves much of the credit for the win.  Linebacker Josh Bynes (#17) recovered three fumbles and had 10 solo tackles to lead the Cobras.  In the first half the Cobra defense stopped the Tigers on the Cobra one-yard line.  The Cobra deficit at half time could have been much worse.

The Cobra team under second year head coach Lawal McCray demonstrated true grit.  Some teams would have packed it in trailing by 19 points after three quarters of play.  However, the Cobra’s demonstrated that a football game is played for four quarters.  The Cobra’s needed only one great quarter to win the game.
