Pressure….Webster’s dictionary defines it as, “a burdensome, distressing or weighty state.”  With six seconds remaining in the game, Cory Lambert, kicker found himself staring at the goal posts 46 yards away.  The crowd was on their feet, Cooper City led 15-13, Lambert had never kicked a game winning field goal.  This was also Lambert’s longest field goal attempt of the season.  The entire stadium was holding their breath.  This was the defining moment of the game.

Approximately one minute earlier it appeared the Cowboys had locked up the game behind the running of Ruther Jean-Baptiste.  Baptiste scored on a two yard run, and on the two-point conversion giving the Cowboys a 15-10 lead.  The Cowboy’s who did not qualify for the playoffs, were looking to upset the District 9-6A champion Wildcats.  However, Western QB Mark Slorp moved the Cowboys down the field in the final minute of play.  With six seconds left in the game Coach Doug Dutton had to make the decision of the game.  Attempt a 46-yard field goal or let Mark Slorp throw a hail mary to the end zone.

With the word a buzzing, Lambert lined up and nailed the 46-yard field goal, giving the Wildcats a 17-15 victory.  The field goal would have been good from 55 yards.  The Wildcat players stormed the field in victory; a super bowl atmosphere filled the stadium.  High School football at its best, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

In a losing effort, Cowboy junior QB, Justin English threw for 132 yards.  Also, Western linebacker Patrick Naddy (#33) intercepted a pass in the 4th quarter and ran 33 yards along the sideline for a Western score.  The Western Wildcats finished the season winning their last four games and lead into the district playoffs.
