Boyd Anderson’s playoff status came down to a 4th down and goal at the Cobra six-yard line.  The Piper Bengal’s had driven the length of the field to the Cobra one-foot line.  With less than a minute to play it appeared that the Cobra’s season was sinking fast.  However, a delay of game call, a missed field goal and an inspired defense persevered a 13-12 win for the Cobra’s.

The win clinched a playoff birth for the resurgent Cobras.  BA football has fell on tough times the last three years.  The team has experienced losing records and absence from the state playoff series.  The 13-12 win puts a little swagger in the Cobra walk.

The Cobras struck first as Frantz Accino (#24) returned a Bengal fumble and ran it seven yards for the score.  At the end of the first quarter the Cobra’s led 7-0.  In the second quarter QB Herbert Bynes (#12) ran around the right side and scored on a 29 yard run, increasing the score to 13-0 with 6:19 left in the second quarter.

The Piper Bengal’s, who came into the game with a 1-6 record could have easily quit and packed it in.  However, with less than a minute to go before half time, Piper QB Stephen Romano (#10) hit Steven Maglock  (#7) on a tipped pass for 37 yards and the Bengal’s cut BA’s lead to 13-6.

The Bengal’s running game took control in the second half.  Jarius Williams (#9) ran for 141 yards in 23 carries with 3:08 left in the third quarter.  Williams scored on an 18-yard run, trimming the lead to 13-12.

The Bengal’s drove the ball from their 5-yard line to the BA two in the final minutes of play.  The BA defense led by middle linebacker Gerald Williams (#3) forced Piper to kick a deciding 22-yard field goal.  The field goal went wide left, preserving a Cobra victory.

The Cobras broke a two game losing streak and moved to 6-2.  The win clinched a playoff birth for the Cobras; signaling that Cobra football is back.  With an undefeated junior varsity team this year, the Cobra’s are looking to return to BCAA prominence in the coming years.
