The best thing about the post season in any sport is the opportunity for seniors to compete against one another, and as the 11th Annual Broward/Miami Dade Wrestling Tournament will take place this Friday night, Mar. 6, the objective for the Broward team is to cut into the impressive 10-0 record that Miami-Dade holds.
Both teams will be loaded for the event at Nova High, which gets started at 6:30 p.m., and while the talent level on both sides of the mat will feature plenty of state champions and state placers, winning and losing is not the only objective.
"This is going to be one of those events that showcases all of South Florida," said veteran Nova coach Ron Schulz. "Because of the many events we have during the year, wrestlers and coaches from the two counties have gotten to know each other very well, so it comes down to more of a social event than anything else."
While some competitors from both teams will compete in the prestigious Senior Nationals next month, it's a way to keep in shape and stay sharp in a competitive atmosphere.
Miami-Dade state champions Eric Chandler (Braddock), Wilson Metelus, Kendrick Sanders and Willie Wiggins (South Dade), and Rey Parrado (Goleman) will be in action along with Broward state champs Frank Pettineo and Paul Marcello from Cardinal Gibbons.
Marcello and Eric Chandler will face off in a battle of state champions, as will Pettineo and Sanders, who is rated No. 1 in the nation at 145.
The admission for the event is $5.
"I think we all look forward to this event," said Allen Held of South Broward. "It's something we start planning for before the state tournament. The fans like it. So do the parents and the kids. It's a great thing for everyone involved."
