Boyd Anderson girls, St. Thomas boys track down BCAA titles

Make no mistake, when it comes to championship track teams, Boyd Anderson’s girls and St. Thomas Aquinas’s boys have the market cornered on dominating programs.

Last weekend, both programs capped off a week long of impressive performances with team titles at the BCAA Track and Field Championships at Coral Springs High School.

The Lady Cobras rolled to a 52 point win over second place Fort Lauderdale to bring home the team title. St. Thomas simply overwhelmed a field that included second place South Broward (54 points) as the Raiders rolled to 131.5 points.

Boyd Anderson used titles by  the 3,200 relay team (9:49.25), 100 Hurdles: Jasmine King (14.80), 100: Shayla Sanders (11.89), 400 relay: (46.92), 300 Hurdles: King (45.06), 800: Imani Sudlow (2:17.22), 1,600 relay: (3:51.44), and Discus: Shamona Haughton (123-5).

When the Cobras weren’t winning titles, which was rare, some of the other shining stars of Broward County also put their best foot forward.

Cardinal Gibbons’ Macy Huskey (5:17.92) won the 1600, Darshay Davis from Everglades (24.31) won the 200: the 3,200 title was won by Alexandra Payne of St. Thomas, Jahneel Tryrell’s 19-2.75 won the long jump title for Fort Lauderdale. Her teammate Sasha-Ann Lebert (37-7) won the shot put, Julia Frederick of Coral Springs had a 5-6 mark to win the high jump title while Nova’s Brittany Todaro (9-6) won the pole vault and Blanche Ely‘s Shadiqua Hunt (37-3) captured the triple jump title.

STA - ALL THE WAY
While St. Thomas was placing many of its impressive athletes, some of the drama of the finals belonged to Boyd Anderson, second place South Broward and Deerfield Beach in the 400-meter relay final.

The Bucks continued to dominate the competition in the event as senior Cassius McDowell showed why he is one of the top sprinters in the state, finishing with a 41.26, just a head of the Cobras (41.40) and Bulldogs (41.83).

McDowell (10.67) also edged out Phillip Dorsett (10.79) and Lamarcus Joyner (10.83) of St. Thomas to win the 100 title.

Taravella won the 3,200 Relay: (8:17.47), speedy Fort Lauderdaloe standout Tesfa Samuel took home the 110 Hurdles crown (14.64), Coral Glades Santiago Zerda (4:25.95) won the 1600 and the 3200 with a time of 9:45.42, Arman Hall of Hallandale took home the 400 championship with a time of 48.36, the 800 was won by James Douglas of Everglades, who had a 1:58.70, Jarmal Jones of Coral Springs won the 200 with a blazing time of 21.73. His teammates Demornie Lodge won the long jump (22-6.50).

For the second straight year, Blanche Ely’s Cyrus Johnson won the high jump with a height of 6-4, and the Triple Jump title went to South Broward’s Rijcard Eyma (46-7),

The Raiders won the 300 Hurdles with Jeremy Tatham (38.84), 1,600 Relay: (3:20.03), Discus: John Armargosa (163-6), Shot Put: Garth Jobb (52-4.25) and the Pole Vault: David Shepherd (15-1).
