Taravella gaining plenty of momentum

I remember when Dan Marguriet began coaching in Broward County. From the first time we met, you could tell that this was someone who had the best interest of the kid in mind.

While his teams were always in the mix, you could guarantee that they would always be in great condition and know the game as well as any in Broward County.

From South Plantation, where he had some amazing football talent, to Flanagan, Coconut Creek and now, Taravella, Marguriet’s teams (98 career wins) have always been ready to play and would battle you to the end.

Recently, I had the pleasure of watching the Trojans play in the Miami Dolphins Academy 7-on-7, and came away impressed at the talent level, athletic ability and positive attitude the players had.

While I won’t pick the Trojans to know Deerfield out of the way, they could end up being much the way Douglas was a year ago with more skilled athletes.

“This is a great group of kids,” Marguriet said. “We have talent, but we also have a group of young men willing to work hard.”

I will say that junior running back/safety Devon Wright (6-1, 175) is as good as you get. He looks like a younger version of Eddie George. Remember, he was the second leading (1,248 yards) running back in the BCAA last year as a sophomore!

Wright represents the kind of talent the Trojans have on this year’s team, but he is not alone. The senior class will be very talented as well - with quarterback/receiver Matt Kassem (5-11, 180), lineman Chris Wright (6-2, 230), tight end Mike McDonald (6-2, 235), fullback Jon Williamson (6-0, 210), defensive back Jack Josephy (5-9, 160) and running back Matt Goombs, a 5-9, 180-pounder.

Joining Wright on this year’s Class of 2010 list are linebackers Brandon Steg (6-2, 210) and Ryan Mintz (5-11, 180) and two-way lineman Dave D’Attilo (6-1, 225).

“What we do in the summer will have a direct reflect on what happens during the season,” Marguriet said. “I think the players as already seeing the results of their hard work and dedication to the game.”

NEXT WEEK: The heat of the summer brings out some of the top football talent, and we’ll have it all for you.
