Spring football uncovers new stars

As another school year winds down around Broward County and the athletes from 2008 and 2009 are being rewarded for a job well done - in the classroom and in the athletic arena, football once again Takes center stage.

Abby Ward

I have been fortunate to cover ever spring football for the past 38 years here in this area, and as I embark on my 39th, I am finding that Broward County is finally on the map.

Over the next few weeks, I will take a look at some of the players to watch for as we head toward summer camps. I will give you a look at not only the top rising seniors, but will give you a sneak peek at some of the underclassmen to keep an eye on for the next few years.

While St. Thomas Aquinas can be thanked for much of the spotlight, there are some other players who represent the BCAA who have also carved out quite a spot in the recruiting scene for the Class of 2010.

Among the top rising seniors who are getting plenty of attention include St. Thomas players Lamarcus Joyner (CB/WR, 5-8, 175), Brandon Linder (OT, 6-5, 275), Gio Bernard (RB, 5-8, 200), Cody Riggs (CB, 5-9, 170), James White (RB, 5-10, 185), Brian Robinson (DB, 5-10, 185), Keion Payne, CB, 6-0-170) and linebacker Vinny Mauro (6-1, 210).

There are also athletes such as Miramar’s Ivan McCartney (WR, 6-2, 175), Tony Grimes (CB, 6-0, 170) and Clarence Murphy (DE, 6-3, 240) from Hollywood Hills, Devon Wright (RB, 6-0, 185, Taravella), Demar Dorsey (S, 6-2, 180) and Cliff Coleman (CB, 5-10, 170) from Boyd Anderson), Shawn Corker (WR, 6-1, 185, Cardinal Gibbons),  and Jonathan Feliciano (OT, 6-4, 275) and Justin Wilson (LB, 6-0, 218) from Western.

There are other schools this spring that also have players who are trying to grab the spotlight. At West Broward, the second year Bobcats, under the direction of Rick Divita will feature the school’s first senior class that includes Rosheed Breedy (WR/FS, 6-0, 180), Luis DeJuan (DE/RB, 6-1, 200), Tyler Dolan (OL, 6-2, 220), Christian Figaroa (LB, 5-11, 205), Rolando Gallegos (OL, 5-11, 230), Lorenzo Intern cola (OLB, 6-1, 175), Jesse Lopez (QB/FS, 6-0, 175), Ian McKinley (LB, 5-9, 175), Trevor Nemrow (OL/DL, 5-10, 205), Daniel Noriega (OLB, 5-9, 160) and David Zappata, a 6-0, 200 offensive lineman/defensive end.

At Nova, head coach Bill Hobbs also has an improving team, which the rising senior class is expected to lead in the fall.

Among this Class of 2010 prospects include Kennedy Allen (OL, 6-2, 290), Khavis Allen (DT, 6-4, 290), Dondetrick Barnes (RB, 6-0, 165), Kwayne Glaze (DT, 6-0, 280), Cameron Hartley (LB, LS, 6-0, 230), Quinten Lambert (OG, 5-11, 260), Alex Morris (DE, 5-11, 185), Brandon Owens (LB, 5-10, 175), Arione Scott (WR, 6-1, 170), Zach Thames (DB, 6-0, 170), Antonio Tucker (WR, 5-11, 150) and Sylvester Warner (OT, 6-3, 310).

Things are also looking promising for head coach Rich Maresco and the South Plantation Paladins. The senior class will look to improve on last year’s finish with returning players and members of a one-loss junior varsity program.

Among the seniors on the roster include Khari Burke (CB, 5-11, 165), Brett Crumley (C, 6-0, 210), Dalton Desravines (LB, 6-0, 195), Rashawn Hudson (DE, 6-2, 195), Constantin Jean-Baptiste (RB, 5-9, 165), Johnathan Joseph (TE, 6-2, 200), Johnny Marshall (QB/WR, 6-2, 185), Tevin McCray (DE, 6-2, 195) and bruising running back Meshach Waite (5-11, 235).
