Last weekend's BCAA Wrestling Tournament at the Coral Springs Gymnasium produced some impressive moments. Some were expected, and obviously, some were not.
One thing that has been right at the top of the expected list in 10 of the past 11 years is that coach Frank Pettineo and his Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs will either win or be in the top two for the team championship.

The perennial 1A state powerhouse did not disappoint as they rolled to yet another team title as Domingo Simmons (119), C.J. Burke (135) and Frank Pettineo Jr. (145) all rolled to individual championships as the Chiefs piled up 250 points.
The Chiefs are in a rebuilding year for the most part. While they are strong in the lower middle weights with Simmons, Paul Marcelo (125), Chris Andrade (130), Burke and Pettineo, they are also stacked with sophomore David Walters (103), freshman Owen Bailey (112), seniors Jovan Condrey (140), Gerald Permenter (152) and Louis Walsh (160), juniors Elliot Brady (171) and Phillip Whittaker and sophomores Robert Whittaker (215) and heavyweight Bobby Hart.
"This is a team that is still growing and maturing," said Pettineo. "We hope to peak at the regional and state tournaments next month. We know that we have three kids who will definitely score points and three or four others who have a chance to do well."
As impressive as the Chiefs are, you have to give it to Western and coach Charlie Morgan, who surprised everyone last year with a district and regional win, and then this year, finished second in the BCAA event.
Morgan's Wildcats boasted and individual with senior Zack Parker at 140, but also had some key performances with freshman Cody Szeto (112), sophomores Ari Malca (103) and Tim Morgan (119), juniors Dennis Waters (145) and Justin Wilson (215), and seniors Chris Torres (135), Ben Williams (152), Spencer Wichner (160), Justin Schoeff (171), Ryan Conley (189) and heavyweight Sigmund Wilson.
HALL OF FAME
Each year, the Broward County Wrestling Hall of Fame honors wrestlers, contributors and referees that have helped to elevate the sport.
