Okay, we all know that year round, the boys seem to get most of the press when it comes to football. But, during March and April, the fields belong to the young ladies throughout the BCAA.
Thanks to those who have continued to promote the sport, especially the Miami Dolphins, who sponsor events to spotlight the girls, flag football has certainly become popular not just locally, but statewide.
There is even now a state and regional rating system for the sport, and many of our local teams have been able to stand the test.
Here is a look at some of the top 20 BCAA teams in the region:
3. West Broward
4. Cypress Bay
5. Fort Lauderdale
10. Hollywood Hills
11. Pompano Beach
12. Coral Springs Charter
15. Pembroke Pines Charter
17. Cooper City
18. Coconut Creek
20. Coral Springs
Among some of the players who have stepped up so far include Victoria Green (Pompano Beach), Kersten Legacki, Jazmin Green, Adrienne Farr and Emily Engber (Cooper City), Samantha Mendez, Katie Gutmann and Brittni Lilly (Monarch), Faith Smith and Katie Kollar (Coral Springs) and Michelle Weitzer and Andrea Abed (Cypress Bay).
Others to step up so far this season include standouts Terrial Davis (Dillard), Lele Ates, Trisha Etienne and Cierra Thomas for a quality Everglades team. Speaking of impressive teams - Fort Lauderdale boasts Teylah Harris and Tamoriya Hamm. Miramar also looks very good with Jacqueline Futch, Ranisha Cade and Malaysia Mapps leading the way. Other players who have stepped up are Piper’s Sybille Agenor and quarterback Rebecca Burton.
Douglas has looked very good with Sam Ball, Jen Duva and Staci Colbacchini. So has West Broward with Kerrin Welsh and Loredanna Barreto had five sacks. Wester is enjoying success once again this year with Shay Lewis, Jenna Tolzmann, Jessica Thronton and Holly Matthais. Taravella is also look good with Ashley Welly and Carina Victoria also.
