Seven teams remain in the hunt for Orlando

Déjà vu is the key word for BCAA football teams as we head to the second round of the state playoffs.

On a week where all of us are giving thanks for so much during a time that families will get together a celebrate a great meal, there are seven schools who played well enough to advance to yet another week.

In three of the four games involving BCAA teams, the theme will be rematch or payback, which ever fits.

In 6A, it will be the renewal of Plantation and Miramar. The first meeting was won by the 10-1 Patriots, 29-7, in a game that was close early on, but a strong defensive effort gave Miramar a huge edge.

Just two weeks ago, head coach Steve Davis and his Colonels were looking at the possibility of missing out on a playoff spot after dropping a game to rival South Plantation, forcing a three team playoff with the Paladins and Western.

In the first round of the playoffs, many were not giving this team a chance to beat a Deerfield Beach programs that had caught fire and was red hot. But the Colonels reached down deep to pull of a major surprise.

Michael Anderson finally got untracked as the senior ran for 178 yards and three scores in a convincing 38-7 win over the Bucks.

The Patriots used big plays from senior Ivan McCartney and a stingy defense to beat Northeast to move on as the this team seeks yet another region final against a team from Miami-Dade County, which is still a few big weeks off.

ELY-B.A., PART 2
The rematch of the Blanche Ely-Boyd Anderson game will take place as both teams beat Palm Beach County opponents to move on to the second round.

The Cobras used the passing of Dane James, who threw for 201 yards and a touchdown pass before giving way to sophomore Ghierry Vanderkuyp in a 20-14 win over West Boca Raton.

Vanderkuyp also threw for a touchdown when he hit Demar Dorsey down the left side for a 48-yard scoring strike.

The 10-1 Tigers, which were beaten by Northeast in the regular season finale, had little problem in their 49-3 win over Wellington.

Running back Tavaris Walker ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Michael German completed 9 of 27 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.

RAIDERS HOST BULLDOGS, AGAIN
Three weeks ago, an undefeated South Broward team came to St. Thomas Aquinas with high hopes of denting the No. 1 team in the country. It never happened. South Broward lost 51-7!

Now, here we are in the second week of the state playoffs and the two district foes are meeting again, and while many expect the same thing, South Broward head coach Allen Held and his Bulldogs have enjoyed a very successful season in posting a 10-1 record.

The 14-6 win over Coconut Creek represented the first playoff win in 12 years as junior running back Kevin Grooms ran for 117 yards in the win.

The Raiders (11-0), as usual, had no problem in beating Coral Springs, 66-8, as senior running back James White ran for 176 yards and the defense was once again up to the task, yielding just one score.

THE DRAGONS ADVANCE
The good news for head coach Joe Redmond and his Stranahan Dragons was this team had finally won a state playoff game, 23-21, over Palm Beach Lakes. There was also good news that this team will once again be at home for a second round game. The not-so-good news is Dragons will play host to one of the state’s premier teams, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, which completely shut Hollywood Hills down.

Corey Tindal came up with an interception with 2:39 remaining to give the 9-2 Dragons a first round win.

Behind the running of Dominic St. Gerad and a 16-yard pass from Willie Tindal to Marquis Turner, Stranahan drove to the 4-yard line to set up St. Gerad's touchdown.

Okay, now comes the part of this column that is not so easy. Picking the winners and losers.

6A
Plantation at Miramar. THE PICK: I was at the first meeting between the two teams, and while the Colonels have improved, the Patriots still have one of the best defensive units around, and for that reason, they should be able to withstand anything Plantation has to offer. Miramar 21, Plantation 12.

5A
Boyd Anderson at Blanche Ely. THE PICK: I was at this meeting as well back on a Saturday night, and while I would like to believe that the Cobras and that great defensive secondary learned from the first meeting, I have to feel the Tigers are motivated to get to the next round. Ely 27, Boyd Anderson 13.

South Broward at St. Thomas Aquinas. THE PICK: I must get to a lot of key games because I was at this one as well, and once again, it doesn’t look good for the Bulldogs. But with that said, how many teams would love to be in the same position as South Broward? St. Thomas Aquinas 48, South Broward 7

4A
Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer at Stranahan. THE PICK: Congratulations to the Dragons for an impressive season, but in the 11 games they played this season, not one opponent came close to having as much talent as the Panthers do. This is a team that lost just once this season to start the season against Glades Central. Dwyer 47, Stranahan 14.

LAST WEEK: 8-2.
