Could Cardinal Gibbons be the surprise team in 2012?

As spring football opened last week across the state of Florida, so many questions
will be answered during the month of May – and as teams try and get their rosters
set for the summer, there are a few teams who may be slipping below the radar
screen.

While the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs did make the playoffs – finishing second in
the district last year – when this team left the field after losing to eventual state
champion Miami Norland in the first round of the playoffs, you could see that there
was a confidence setting in.

The Chiefs will be one of the favorites once again to be in the playoffs, but head
coach Mike Morrill and his squad believe that there is just enough of a balance
returning to beat American Heritage, Dillard and Hallandale in district play.

Class of 2013 rising seniors who are expected to make a major impact will
be kicker/quarterback/all around athlete Ryan Giaratano , running back Mike
Ferguson, defensive backs Kevaughn Reid, Darius George and Alfred Battle,
linebackers Keyon Robinson and Ryan Waterhouse, defensive lineman J.D. Brady
and state-rated punter Greg Bursic, who also happens to be a 6-3, 225-pound
defensive end. The present and future of this program, will be wrapped around a
very talented rising class of juniors.

Among those Class of 2014 players you will be watching includes gifted
quarterback Payton Bender, running backs Caine Foster and Marcus Dixon,
receivers Trevon Lee, David Senior and George Rushing, tight end Austin
Liftosky, and linemen Trevor Martin, Matt Knick, Erick Lenzen, Kadeem Smith
and Joe Swiderski.

On defense, the rising junior class is also very talented with linebackers Jesse
Cervone, Luke Niles, Kyle Woodward, Warren Wynn, Kaylan Striggles and Corey
McCoy. Linemen Devaughn Priester, Jaylen Robinson and Rocky Miyares will
add depth as well as front line competition.

The Chiefs are also looking for the rising sophomore class to make a contribution
during the spring and summer, getting ready for the fall. Players such as Therell
Gosier, WR/TE), Richard McIntosh, DE/TE), Tavares Moore (DB), Demetrious
Amerson (LB/FB), Melvin Brooks (WR/DE), John Graham (DB) and Antone Hodge (RB/DB).
