Boyd Anderson and West Broward

As I told you last week, if you stick with this column throughout the summer, you will find out everything you need to know about the football teams in Broward County, and while we will take you throughout the state to different camps and other events, we will also provide in depth looks at the newsmakers.

Today, we have a look at two teams who are as different as you can get. One is a newer school that is hoping to continue to grow in its third year, while the other is a 5A power that believes that it has the talent to make a serious run at a spot that St. Thomas Aquinas has owned.

For the Cobras of Boyd Anderson, finishing 7-5 was not what head coach Mark James had in his plans for a talented team last year. That's why the move to 5A will bring a new optimism with plenty of athletes on board.

The senior class features defensive headliners in University of Florida commitment
Demar Dorsey (FS/CB, 6-2, 190) and defensive back Clifton Coleman (5-10, 175). Both lead a senior class that also features Kris Brazil (DL/FB, 5-10, 210), Stephen Clarke (WR/CB, 5-9, 180), Darius Dukes (RB/LB, 5-10, 200), Matthew Grant (TE/DE, 6-4, 230), Steven Green (WR, 5-9, 165), Lenworth Lennon (WR, 5-9, 155), Anthony May (FB/NT, 5-10, 265), Daniel Middleton (WR, 6-1, 190), Sebastian Spencer (OG, 5-9, 235), Marcus Thompson (RB, 6-2, 230), Craig Weaver, Jr. (QB, 5-11, 160) and tight end/defensive end Linval Williams (6-3, 232).

The junior class is also a place where the Cobras figure to be impressive as well with Wendy Belizaire (OL, 6-1, 295), Harmon Brown (DB, 5-9, 180), Mike Brown (DB/LB, 5-10, 180), Dane James (QB, 6-0, 185), Marcus Roberson (DB, 5-11, 165), Sebastien Tuff (6-2, 315), Kent Turene (LB, 6-2, 220), Shaun Ward (DL/TE, 6-1, 225), Victor Williams (RB, 5-8, 160) and up-and-coming standout receiver Jesse York (5-11, 180).

WEST BROWARD BUILDS
While the Cobras will be in the hunt for a playoff spot, second year program West Broward, under the direction of veteran head coach Rick Divita is still going through some growing pains.

The Bobcats, which failed to win a game last season, does have plenty of talent, but lacks the experience.

The senior class boasts athletes such as Rosheed Breedy (WR/FS, 6-0, 180), Luis DeJuan (DE/RB, 6-1, 200), Tyler Dolan (OL, 6-2, 220), Christian Figaroa (LB, 5-11, 205), Rolando Gallagos (OL, 5-11, 230), Lorenzo Interncola (OLB, 6-1, 175), Jesse Lopez (QB/FS, 6-0, 175), Ian McKinley (LB, 5-9, 175), Trevor Nemrow (OL/DL, 5-10, 205), Daniel Noriega (OLB, 5-9, 160) and offensive lineman/defensive end David Zappata (6-0, 200).

The junior class will also be loaded with potential as Conor Doole (P/PK), Mike Fratanni (6-2, 200), Chris Leyva (QB, 5-10, 180), Andy Moas (OL/NT, 6-2, 275), Mike Padin (RB/DB, 5-9, 165) and Brandon Rose (RB/DB, 5-10, 175) figure to get better with experience. Also keep an eye on Class of 2010 linebacker Marquise Piton (6-0, 200).

MCARTHUR DOES WELL AT UCF
As we do each summer, getting to a number of camps and combines keeps us busy, and this year will be no exception.

Last weekend, we followed the McArthur Mustangs to Orlando for the University of Central Florida 7-on-7 event, which featured 32 teams, and by the end of the day, the Mustangs found their way in the field of 8, only to lose to eventual champions, tampa Alonso, 20-12.

Great showing for a McArthur team that is getting better and better, and will be one of the most battle-tested programs around with several stops planned this summer.
