Cypress Bay High School secured its second state championship last month when the boy’s swim team won the Class 3A State Swimming and Diving Championship.
“I knew we had a good team, but I never expected we would win the state championship,” said Head Coach Robert Caragol.
Seniors Ricardo Barbosa and Robert Gomez, Juniors Mark Huang and Ben Kozoil, Sophomores Rodolfo Barbosa, Sean Spire, and Mario Santana came in first place at the state meet Nov. 11th and 12th at the Ft. Lauderdale Aquatic Center.
The swimmers also secured three other state titles in the 200-medley relay and the 400- medley relay. Gomez won the individual 100-freestyle race.
“They worked well as a team and had their best times when it counted,” Caragol said.
Caragol said he told the players that they may not get another chance like this and to “seize the moment.”
The swimmers agreed that their dedication and hard work throughout the season paid off for them.
“The coach brought us together and made us work hard at every single meet,” said Santana. “It was an unbelievable feeling when we won.”
Santana and Caragol are both in agreement that next year looks just as promising for the team and they hope to secure another state championship.
