Cypress Bay High School Boys Golf

The boys’ Cypress Bay High School Golf team is off to a winning start with a 2-0 record defeating Cooper City and Taravella.

Seniors Allen Levy and Julian Gil and Juniors Robert DeMaio and Nick DeMatteis are returning players and leading the team.

Junior Santiago Lopez and Sophomore Josh Echemendia are new to the team and have helped to secure the winning combination.

“They have all set high goals for themselves, individually as well as a team,” said head Coach Vince Grossi adding that their goal this year is to win both districts and regionals and place in the top 8 at the state tournament.

Last year, the boys’ golf team finished tenth in the state competing against some of the strongest schools in the county including St. Thomas, Cooper City and Western.

“We are expecting to be better this year than last year and the new players are a great addition to the team,” Gil said.

The players on the teaming are anxiously awaiting playing Coral Springs and St. Thomas-- their toughest competition in their Division.

The team was invited to play in the Westminster Christian Academy Invitational Tournament in early September at the Biltmore Country Club Resort in Miami.

They are one of 13 teams in the state invited to compete in the prestigious tournament.

Grossi said there is a lot of camaraderie amongst the players and they are all very supportive of each other on and off the course.

Gil and Levy spend their free time working at the driving range at their home course, Bonaventure Country Club in Weston.  Both players are hoping to get a scholarship and play golf at a Florida University.

The players credit Coach Grossi with much of their success and are hopeful they can win him a state championship.

“Coach Grossi is great at building our confidence and is very supportive to all of the players,” Levy said. “He really cares about all of us and makes us want to work hard.”

“We are either going to go big or go home,” Levy said. “If we all put our minds to it we can get there…it is a team effort.”
